An Original Northern Electric 324 "Brownie" - Lineman's Test Set. Includes Original Leather Case.

The Northern Electric 324 lineman's test set, fondly called the Brownie, was used to measure DC voltage & resistance, and to detect shorted wires. Many technicians refer to this unit a "Kick Meter", so called because a switch can be thrown to show the capacitive "kick" in terms of "Points." By using one of these meters, it is quite possible to determine the number of ringers on a line.

Tests for ground, shorts, opens, crosses and splits can be made. Two 6-ft test leads are included. Also of note is the original leather carry case. This one is of particular interest due to the strap and buckle still being intact. Most you find will be broken because of the dryness of the leather.

This device requires an Eveready 455 Battery (45 volts - not included). It is possible to substitute 5 x 9 volt batteries in series for the 455. You'll need a bit of ingenuity to get them together in a way that fits, but they will meet or exceed the current rating of the old battery -- especially if you use alkaline cells.

Here are links to a Sales Brochure and an Operating Manual for an identical unit made by Simpson. We've also included a link to a document that provides instructions on using the meter for ringer detection.
